About Just Makes Cents
Just Makes Cents caters to owner-managed businesses with under two million dollars in sales. I operate generally in the western end of the GTA; focusing on Brampton, Mississauga, Vaughan, Etobicoke, and Caledon. However, I do have clients in Burlington, Alberta and British Columbia.
While office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday, I accept requests for appointment in the evenings and on weekends. I can come to you, you can come to my home, or we can do it all by web-based communications, for which I have secure portals for tax software and communications.
I first opened the doors of Just Makes Cents - Joanna Crowe, CPA, CGA, eighteen years ago and since then, I’ve had a wonderful variety of clients, with many different types of businesses. I enjoy meeting my clients personally and I do love pets. I don’t have an average client as they all have their own unique quirks, but that is what makes my job so much fun.
Despite being in existence for eighteen years, I would say my company is in a state of growth as I am always looking for new clients and new challenges. Just as client's needs change or client moves, business is always in a constant state of change.
I am always trying to become more efficient. As some of my clients will attest to, I am not quite there yet, but with the use of computer software internally and changes to how I handle the work as it comes in, I expect the efficiency and customer service to improve drastically over the next year.
In the accounting business, January to June is the busiest time. Between December year-ends for corporations, filing the T4 slips for companies and personal taxes-with April 30 and June 15 deadlines, the spring is crazy. The summer and fall are slower. But corporate work never stops; regular payroll, GST/HST and WSIB remittances, and keeping the books up to date.
While the fall is slower, it’s not idle time for me. That is when I get caught up on all the changes to the tax and reporting laws and take courses to broaden my knowledge in other areas that influence my business.
The Just Makes Cents Difference
Part of my background of work experience has included working in Public Accounting Practices of various sizes. I believe this is what sets me apart from my competitors as I can take the client’s file through all the bookkeeping, right up to the financial statements and corporate tax returns or right to the point where the year-end accountant will take over.
The experience in the Public accounting firms has also made me very familiar with the occasional government inquiry into the company's books or individual's claims on their taxes.
Another aspect that sets me apart from the competition is that I always personalize my service to the clients, and put them first. I like to have a flexible schedule as it gives me the opportunity to meet clients based on their schedules. For regular clients, I know approximately when I will be needed and make sure those days are blocked off so that I am available to them if need be.
At Just Makes Cents, I not only take care of the business side, I also support and provide suggestions for the personal side of the equation as well. I don't run my business with a “Thank you for your business, I'll see you next year and there is the door attitude.” I like to be accessible to clients throughout the year and assist them with any issues that could come up at any time. This is one of the reasons clients have stayed with me over the years.
When it comes to client’s requirements, one area that has become quite common for me is multiple year filings. I have had some corporate clients but mostly personal clients that come to me asking to bring their files up to date for periods anywhere from two to three years and even up to fifteen years.
I have also extended my services to several new business start-ups. I am more involved with these clients as they are setting up the full set of books and I guide them through the trials and tribulations of a new business.
While one of my biggest achievements is the ability to always bounce back from setbacks, my dream is to have the perfect work-life balance and spend as much time with my kids as I can.
