I’m Joanna Crowe, proud owner of Just Makes Cents.

I look forward to sharing my story. I hope that you will enjoy getting to know me better.

I grew up in Scarborough, Ontario and I studied Ryerson University in Toronto.

The best part of being in the accounting business is the one-on-one client meetings and the flexibility to work when I want, which allows me to balance work with the needs of my young family.

I have seventeen years of experience providing bookkeeping and accountancy services to my clients. The accounting services I provide include personal and corporate tax, financial statements and training on software and other related services. I also provide limited services in human resource issues relating to payroll and some staffing issues.

The most enjoyable part of my work is meeting clients, working on puzzles of how to handle unusual transactions and also working on the client files, the corporate year-ends and bookkeeping.

Typically, I begin my day by helping my kids get ready for the day, followed by reviewing and responding to client’s emails and keeping my invoicing and books up to date. However, this depends on whether I am working on client’s files on site or from home. In either case, I ensure any client calls or emails are returned within twenty four to forty eight hours and although that’s my goal every day, it’s not always feasible to meet it.

My normal routine also includes meeting with clients to receive their files or drop the packages back to them and mail any packages or response letters to Canada Revenue Agency or the clients using one of the major shipping companies. This helps me to provide my clients with traceable packages, for their peace of mind. Providing bookkeeping and accounting services, preparing corporate tax returns and financial statements, also, preparing personal returns and invoicing my clients and keeping my books up to date are some of my main responsibilities.

The most important decisions that I make everyday include planning the best tax strategies for my clients, balancing the client files when I have multiple files in at once, prioritizing the files as needed and figuring out how to meet the client’s needs in the most beneficial way possible for all parties.

The top three skills that aid in giving the best accounting services to my clients are attention to detail, patience and ability to explain issues to them with clarity. I attribute my success to hard work, referrals and meeting my client's needs.

I have built my leadership style based on aspects of every supervisor I have ever worked for. I take the best and learn from the worst aspects, and combine them to create my own style. I also respect Andrea Horwath, MPP and leader of the NDP as a public figure. She has taught me the best lesson. When you speak with her, no matter how many people she has met that day she still manages to engage and connect with you.

Away from work, I enjoy playing with my kids and spending time with my family, every moment I spend with them turns out to be the most satisfying moment of my life. I also enjoy reading both, business related literature and murder mysteries and playing computer games when I am free. I also run a small AVON business in my spare time.

It also feels good for the soul to raise money or other donations for a deserving cause. Hence, when I can I support the Knights Table in Brampton and the Canadian Cancer and Breast Cancer societies.
